Though the university has certainly had strong but disparate artistic venues for a long time, such as the Smart Museum and Court Theatre, the arts were once a very peripheral part of the university’s mission, as I can attest based on my experience as a college student there in the eighties. The Logan, in just ten years, has become a focal point in moving the arts to the center of the University experience, and students majoring in the arts have increased more than 130 percent since it opened...[it’s] become the nexus of a new level of engagement with the community around the University on the South Side...”
