This year’s Logan Center OParty is in collaboration with The Year of Games: a university-wide initiative celebrating the vibrant culture of games and play at the University of Chicago! Kick off your year of games with our YofG scavenger hunt! Collect stickers from each category of arts table, then head up to the 9th floor with your completed card and select from the following prizes!

    Dubbed UChicago's "funkiest and least controversial RSO," the Dirt Red Brass Band is the campus’s premier funk and jazz band. We’re throwing a concert, so stop by to dance and have fun! Play an instrument or sing? Meet the band and learn about auditions! (there's also free merch...)

    Medusa A Cappella (11:00 pm)
    Logan Courtyard Medusa is a competitive high-voices A Cappella group that has been on campus for over 25 years. You can find all their music on Spotify!

    EXHIBITION - Untidy Objects South Lawn A “living sculpture” on the University’s campus that includes water and vegetation is also a social intervention, prompting viewers to consider the fact that humans are the only living organisms with legal and political rights. This project will introduce “augmented reality” technology to the sculpture and study the way it alters viewers’ responses to the sculpture’s propositions.

    EXHIBITION - Stitches for the Culture: Past, Present, and Future
    Café Logan The woman behind KenKreates Crochet Art is Kendra Balans.  At the heart of her work is the expression of her identity as an African American LGBTQ+ woman, wife, and mother. Her art reflects the richness and complexity of that experience. Rooted in the spirit of the African American community is the phrase “Do It for the Culture,” which captures the importance of preserving and honoring heritage through creative expression. Stitches for the Culture: Past, Present, and Future embodies that sentiment and features crochet portraits that evoke nostalgia from the ’70s and ’80s, as well as iconic figures and cultural trailblazers.

    Stop by Cafe Logan to sample their Fall menu. Open Monday through Thursday, 8 am to 7:30 pm; Friday, 8 am to 8 pm; Saturday, noon to 6 pm; and Sunday, Noon to 4 pm, Cafe Logan is a great place to study, get coffee and lunch with friends, and enjoy art at the Logan Center.

    Theater and Performance Studies DJ Party
    Theater West Wander in and enjoy live music being spun by a Chicago DJ featuring some of UChicago's street dance crews. This open dance party is a sneak peek at the dance programming that occurs in the Open DJ Dance Sessions in Theatre and Performance Studies. This drop-in event is a chance to check out our theatres, hear some great music, and move your body.

    Meet the Smart Museum of Art

    As the fine arts museum of the University of Chicago, the Smart Museum of Art is a site for rigorous inquiry and exchange that encourages the examination of complex issues through the lens of art objects and artistic practice. In addition to coordinating the storied Art 2 Live With program on campus, the Smart welcomes students to attend a variety of artist talks, art-making workshops, performances, community programs, study halls, classes for all disciplines and more!     Sliced Bread is the literary and arts magazine for UChicago undergraduates. We work closely with our selected writers to workshop their pieces and curate print issues every other quarter.     Occam’s Razor Gidwitz Lobby Occam's Razor is UChicago's independent improv comedy troupe, bringing the funniest and freest improv to our campus since 1999. Members meet twice a week in preparation for three awe-inspiring performances each quarter. Come to auditions during the second week of classes for the chance to explore the remotest chambers of the human soul with us.

    EXHIBITION - Lauren Deutsch and Jonathan Woods’ Tangible Sound: An Immersive Experience of Great Black Music is a salute to the 60th Anniversary of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM).

    Experience a synesthetic series of projected animated sound palettes and abstracted performance portraits of musicians and their music in celebration of the sixth decade of a Black music collective whose philosophy and practice of exploding boundaries and convention has influenced and inspired generations of artists to express the exhilaration and transformation of what the AACM calls a “power stronger than itself.  Also, be sure to pick up a Hyde Park Jazz Festival Schedule to experience great Jazz on Saturday and Sunday, September 27th and 28th.

    SSFMP, or the South Side Free Music Program, is a community service RSO that provides free one-on-one music lessons to students from Hyde Park and surrounding neighborhoods. Stop by our table to learn about the work we do and how you can support the Chicago community with your musical skills!

    Groove Theory Dance Crew Freestyle Cypher

    Groove Theory Dance Crew is the only freestyle hip-hop dance crew on campus. We're no cuts, and we're super beginner-friendly. Today we want to showcase different styles of hip-hop, all of which are freestyled, and we invite you to vibe and groove along, and to join us in the end to make a cypher.

    Music forum is a live-sound orientated RSO that brings interested musicians of all experience levels together to play songs and jam. Meetings occur once a week, and songs are recommended and chosen by member vote.

  • Come meet Cadenza!
    Classroom 603 Founded in 1989 under the name ‘Unaccompanied Women’, Cadenza is the oldest a cappella group at the University of Chicago. As a high voices group, we pride ourselves on telling stories through our music, and all of our songs are arranged by members, past and present. As a group, we compete in the ICCAs every other year and record music as often as possible. Most recently, we placed third at the 2024 ICCA Great Lakes Quarterfinals. You can listen to our entire 2024 ICCA Set on our new EP ‘Overflow’!! We look forward to welcoming new cadets this fall and hope to see YOU at auditions!!

    Find your inner acrobat at UChicago's one and only circus RSO! Your local jesters at Le Vorris and Vox will be teaching basic moves in aerial silks, trapeze, ground acrobatics, glow poi, and more. No previous experience necessary!

    Chinese Instrument Show and Tell with Jade Chinese Music Ensemble

    Jade Chinese Music Ensemble is a mixed ensemble with both Western and traditional Chinese instruments. Participants will learn about and try their hand at various traditional Chinese instruments, such as erhu (Chinese violin), guzheng (Chinese zither), etc. Participants can make traditional Chinese paper cutting crafts as they listen to live music played by the ensemble! We welcome all musicians from all backgrounds, no matter your experience or instrument. If you are a musician or simply just interested in music, please drop by!

  • Circle Singing with Voices in Your Head

    Calling anyone who loves to sing — join us for an evening of vocal music! Throughout the night, we will play fun vocal improv games and learn short quartet-based tunes. We encourage all to contribute their voice, regardless of skill level. Voices looks forward to singing with you!

    Learn some Tags with Run for Cover!
    801 RFC seeks to provide a creative outlet to talented singers/musicians, rehearsing 6-8 hours a week. A low voice a cappella group, we frequently release recorded music, compete in competitions, and perform for the UChicago community.

    EXHIBITION – Pope.L’s Cliff
    8th Floor Windows
    As you explore the Logan Center tower – check out the art piece on the windows on Floor 7, 8, and 9, created by former DoVA faculty member Pope.L. Cliff speaks in a contradictory fashion to its surroundings: its peaks and valleys are cast against the ultra-flat Midwestern urban scape that is visible through the windows in all directions. Amidst the incongruous desert cliffs one can make out single letters that spell out a slogan: ON STRIKE FOR BETTER SCHOOLS.
